Sacred Heart College’s Grade 11’s enjoy job shadowing with alumni
Job shadowing allows students to get first-hand exposure to careers they are interested in pursuing, by engaging with volunteers from various fields. Sacred Heart College hosted a job shadowing workshop with some of our alumni. Eleven Sacred Heart College alumni were part of the workshop which allowed Grade 11 students to engage with the world of work and see that a career is much more than a qualification. This job shadowing workshop, which has a 12-year history, is an exciting partnership between our alumni and Sacred Heart College.
Our alumnus, Shivan Mansingh, was one of our keynote speakers. Shivan, a chartered accountant, matriculated in 2003 and holds an MBA which he completed in 2018. As the successful Group Chief Finance Officer and Executive Director at Metrofile, one of the largest data-storage companies in Southern Africa and internationally, he attributes a large part of his success to the College’s excellent education and highly skilled teachers. “My time at Sacred Heart College also taught me the importance of humility and what it means to be grounded. The diversity of students and teachers contributed to this. I thought this was a normal part of an independent school education until I met peers from other independent schools and realized that this was what made Sacred Heart College distinctive.” said Mr Shivan Mansingh. He also repeatedly encouraged students to do extensive research before choosing a career path and making life-changing decisions.
Students enjoyed exploring the different career journeys and experiences which the participating alumni had to offer them. Other alumni who participated in the workshop are professionals in various industries including law, business, actuarial science, veterinary science and the creative arts industry. One of the Grade 11 learners, speaking on behalf of the participating students, thanked the alumni who spent time with them for the unique experience they had offered. The student highlighted that the experience was motivating and had certainly convinced them to start exploring their passions and interests. Sacred Heart College is a Marist Co-Educational school which provides innovative, values-based education from Playgroup to Matric.
