Camps Bay High School canoeists shine at Sprint Champs
Camps Bay High School’s Canoeists, Holly Smith in Grade 10 and Jared Shrimpton in Grade 8, both had excellent results at the Canoeing South Africa National Sprint Championships and South African Schools Sprint Championships held at the Lomond Dam near Gansbaai from 23 – 25 April. The discipline is competed at four distances: 5000m, 1000m, 500m and 200m.
Jared came second in the U14 boys K1 (singles) races and first in all his doubles races, with his partner Ryley Smith from Ambleside. Jared also earned a silver medal for U14 boys Victor Ludorum. Holly also had a good weekend of racing. In the K1 (singles) for the 5000m, 1000m, 500m, 200m she obtained silver medals, just being narrowly beaten by her doubles partner.
In the K2-doubles, Holly and partner, Georgia, won all events by a good margin – the highlight for the duo was beating the U18 girls whom they will race against at SA Marathon Champs. On 27 April 2022, Jared also competed in the 8km surf ski short course Freedom paddle, hosted from the Oceana Power Boat Club in Granger Bay where he finished in second place in the U14 boys division and an incredible third place overall.
