[Interview] Bubele Thibini: Union High School’s First Team Rugby Captain
AWSUM spoke with Bubele Thibini, Union High School’s first team rugby captain about Interschools.
What is the highlight of your team’s rugby season this year?
I would say that this year’s highlight for our team, would have been our senior sports festival hosted by Union High School, where we thrashed Camp’s Bay and Cambridge. Many doubted our ability to win against Cambridge, and it was amazing proving them wrong.
How do you motivate your team?
I usually motivate my guys by talking to them and hyping them up. I also play my heart out in each game in order to motivate the rest of the players to put it all on the line and do the same.
Who is your vice-captain and how does he support you?
My vice-captain is Ruzhé Hendricks – he helps me when it comes down to making tough decisions during games. He also assists me by making sure our teammates are motivated to the fullest.
Are you happy with your team’s line-up for Interschools? Do you have any injuries in your team?
I am happy with the team’s line-up for Interschools. The forward pack looks strong and physical – which is what we will definitely need in the game against Volkskool. Our backline also looks ready for the challenge ahead of them. I am confident that the backline will pull through for the team when the time comes.
Sisipho Arnols – who served as the team’s captain before being injured, suffered a broken wrist during the recent EP rugby trials – we’ll miss him during this year’s Interschools’ encounter.
What do you as a team want to achieve this year? What will make you proud?
I think it’s a relatively obvious answer, but our goal for this year is to be victorious at Interschools.
What are your plans for the future?
I hope to further my studies in Real Estate and Property Development in Cape Town. I will also be taking the field for the Western Province Academy team next year and we’ll see where that leads to.
